Smash a challenge! Take a break. Try that new studio that just opened! Take a break. New Year’s resolution to get fit! You get the drift…
If this sounds like you, you’re not alone.
The main problem we see for new clients at LA Fit is that they take a few classes then drop off. The inconsistency makes their health journey so much harder.
So what’s the secret to staying on track?
Consistency is the secret sauce to achieving fitness goals, and it’s a lot more valuable than you might think. While it’s tempting to dive into a new workout routine five times a week, studies show that pacing yourself with 2-3 workouts weekly is often more effective – and sustainable – over the long term.
Let’s talk numbers. Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that people who engage in regular physical activity 2-3 times a week are more likely to maintain their exercise routine over the long term compared to those who attempt higher frequencies.
Another study, from the British Journal of Sports Medicine, also found that consistent exercise 2-3 times a week leads to better long-term commitment and provides comparable health benefits to more frequent workouts. This study also noted that those who followed this moderate approach experienced less physical and mental fatigue, which is key to keeping up motivation over time.
Why? Burnout is real. When you push yourself too hard, too fast, your body can hit a wall, making you more prone to injuries, fatigue, and the dreaded slump of missed workouts and low motivation.
On the flip side, a well-paced routine of 2-3 sessions a week allows your body to recover, adapt and grow stronger. You’ll notice the benefits – like improved muscle tone, better endurance, and a boost in overall energy – without the strain of overtraining. Plus, with a more balanced approach, you’re less likely to see exercise as a chore and more likely to keep it up long-term.
So, if you’re juggling a busy schedule and thinking about what’s sustainable, remember that less can be more. Prioritise quality over quantity, and you’ll find that sweet spot where fitness fits seamlessly into your life, keeping you on track to goals without burning out.
Consistency is key!
